Google Search Console (GSC)

Also known as: GSC, Search Console, Webmaster Tools (former name)

Google Search Console is Google's free official tool for site owners. It supplies the only first-hand data on the queries through which a page is found — clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position — as well as the indexing status of every URL, Core Web Vitals, manual actions, mobile usability, sitemap processing and backlink profiles. Introduced in 2015 as the successor to Webmaster Tools, it is indispensable to any SEO strategy: no external platform supplies comparable first-party data. Anyone who has not yet set it up will find step-by-step instructions on property types, the five verification methods and the connection to Rankmio in our complete setup guide for 2026.

The reports that matter

The API, for those who need more

The Search Console API allows up to 16 months of daily performance data to be retrieved in batches of 25,000 rows. That makes it possible to build topic cluster analyses, brand versus non-brand splits, reports across several properties and trend charts that the interface itself does not offer. Rankmio uses this API for keyword tracking, click-through gap analysis and page performance trends.

Search Console and Analytics

The two belong together but measure different things. Search Console shows behaviour before the click — which query produced visibility in the results. Analytics shows behaviour after it — what the visitor does on the page. Only the combination gives the full picture: Search Console for discovery and visibility, Analytics for engagement and conversion.

Example from practice

Example: In the performance report an agency filters for queries ranking between eleventh and twentieth with at least 200 impressions a month. The result is 87 keywords for which the domain earns barely 0.3 clicks per impression, because it sits on the second page of results. Improving the content of the three main topic clusters lifts 28 of those keywords into the top ten, and monthly traffic doubles from 4,200 to 9,800 clicks.

Frequently asked questions

What does Google Search Console do?
Google Search Console is a free Google tool that shows three things: which queries reach your site, what technical indexing problems exist, and any security warnings or manual actions. It is the only reliable access to genuine Google click data for your domain.
Do you have to set it up?
Yes, without qualification. Without it there are no click data, no impressions and no control over indexing. No professional SEO tool can substitute for it, because the data come exclusively from Google. Rankmio connects through OAuth and pulls the data automatically into the keyword hub, the visibility index and the opportunity engine.
How long is the data kept?
Search Console shows only the last 16 months of clicks and impressions. Anyone who needs longer trends must export the data or use a tool that stores the history. Rankmio archives it per project with no time limit.
Where do I find indexing errors?
Under "Pages", formerly called "Coverage". It shows which URLs were indexed, which were not and why. Common categories are "excluded by noindex", "duplicate without canonical tag", "not found (404)" and "soft 404", each with concrete example URLs.
How current is the data?
It lags by roughly 24 to 72 hours. Clicks and impressions typically arrive with two to three days' delay; indexing reports refresh every few days; manual actions appear at once. For day-by-day rank observation you need a rank tracking tool such as the Rankmio position tracker.
