Helpful Content System

Also known as: Helpful Content, HCS, Helpful Content Update

The Helpful Content System is Google's ranking-relevant assessment system, introduced in August 2022, which prioritises content written for people rather than for search engines. The original aim was to reduce mass-produced affiliate and SEO spam; with the arrival of ChatGPT it took on a second edge: weak, automatically generated content with thin substance is heavily demoted. In 2024 the system was integrated into the Google core algorithm — it no longer runs as a separate update, but permanently.

Google's twelve helpful content questions

Google has published an official list that website operators can use to check whether their content is ”helpful". In short: who wrote the article (a real person with expertise?), who it is written for (an existing target audience?), how much added value of its own it offers (original insights, own tests, own data?), demonstration of first-hand experience, richness of the answers, a clear main message, and no recognisable AI generation without human editing.

Helpful content and AI: what works and what does not

Google has made it clear that how content is created is not the criterion — AI generation is not inherently ”unhelpful". What matters is the result: does the text add value beyond what the top ten SERP results already say? With pure AI generation and no human editorial work the answer is usually no — the text is statistically probable, but without its own research, without genuine insights, without unique data. Such content is demoted mercilessly by the Helpful Content System.

How to write in line with the HCS

Example from practice

Example: In 2023 a magazine produced more than 800 AI-generated affiliate articles without human editing. After the September update the domain lost 92 % of its visibility within 6 weeks — a classic HCS demotion. The recovery strategy: mass archiving of the weakest 600 articles (noindex), editorial reworking of the best 200 with own tests, images and author signatures, and new editorial guidelines. After 11 months: 60 % of the visibility recovered and markedly higher-quality traffic — but 6 months of hard clean-up work as the price for the original mass production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Helpful Content System?
The Helpful Content System is a component of the Google algorithm that has assessed content since August 2022: ”written for users" or ”optimised for search engines". Sites whose content is predominantly search-engine-optimised are penalised site-wide.
Is helpful content a filter or a ranking signal?
Both. Initially a filter (2022-2023: a separate system), and since March 2024 integrated into the core ranking algorithm. It acts site-wide — weak content in one area can drag down the whole domain. Pure content farms have been deindexed on a large scale since 2024.
How does Google recognise ”unhelpful" content?
Through several signals at once: thin content, no original perspective, poor user signals (short dwell time, a high proportion of returns to the SERP), AI-generated without editing, thematically incoherent, keyword stuffing.
How does a penalised site recover?
Through consistent content improvement. Delete or rewrite thin content, add author signals, build in first-hand experience, define clear content goals. Recovery typically takes 6–12 months — usually only with the next core update iteration.
