Also known as: Inbound link, Incoming link, Referring link
A backlink is a hyperlink from an external website to your own domain. Search engines treat it as a recommendation: the more thematically relevant and trustworthy domains link to a page, the higher its authority. The concept comes from the original Google PageRank algorithm of 1998 and, despite all model updates, remains one of the three most important ranking signals to this day — alongside content quality and search intent. Explained in detail in the Insights article Backlinks 2026 — the ultimate guide to SEO, AI Overviews and AI visibility, with a 30-day plan, digital PR data and Bing WMT as an additional link source.
Not every backlink counts equally. The decisive factors are: the domain authority of the referring page, thematic proximity to the link target, position within the text (content link > footer/sidebar), anchor text (descriptive rather than ”click here”) and dofollow vs. nofollow. A hundred thematically relevant links from specialist media carry more weight than ten thousand from link farms.
There are three routes: (1) Earned links — others link voluntarily because the content is useful (studies, tools, data). (2) Outreach — targeted approaches to editorial teams, bloggers and partners. (3) Branded mentions — PR and brand building create mentions that can be turned into links. Bought links and exchange networks breach Google's guidelines and lead to penalties.
Key metrics: referring domains (the number of distinct linking domains, more important than the total number of links), Domain Rating / Authority Score (0–100, vendor-dependent — Ahrefs DR, Moz DA, Semrush AS), backlink profile growth (organic and steady rather than erratic) and anchor text distribution (natural: a mix of brand, URL, generic and topic-relevant).
Example: A new online shop for coffee accessories starts with a Domain Rating of 0. After three months of targeted outreach it has gained 22 referring domains from coffee magazines and barista blogs — Domain Rating rises to 18, and in parallel the organic top-10 rankings for mid-range money keywords double. A classic backlink lever without a single penny spent on advertising.
