Citability Score

Also known as: Citability-Score, AI citability score, AI Citability Score

The Citability Score is a composite metric (0–100) developed by Rankmio that measures how well an individual web page can be recognised and cited as a source by generative AI search engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews). Unlike classic SEO scores (visibility index, Domain Rating), it assesses exclusively structural and content-related factors that determine citability in LLM answers — not backlinks or classic rankings.

What the score assesses

The score draws on 33+ checkpoints across five dimensions: topic coverage (thematic coverage measured against the knowledge graph environment), heading hierarchy (H1-H6 consistency and answerability per section), entity completeness (are all relevant entities named and ideally linked to a Wikidata QID via sameAs?), source citations (density of external sources, links to primary sources), structured data (complete Schema.org markup with author, datePublished and article body selectors).

Free Basic Check vs Full Check

The Basic Check is algorithmic (no AI call) and examines H1, H2 structure, paragraph length, number of lists, source links and text length — an immediate 0-credit score as a first orientation. The Full Check adds AI-based examinations: whether factual statements are sufficiently substantiated, whether entities are named consistently, whether the main questions are answered within the first 2-3 sentences of each section, and on request it generates Schema.org JSON-LD including Wikidata sameAs automatically.

Example from practice

Example: A blog page with a score of 48 had its main problems in (a) a missing Article schema with author byline, (b) three brand names mentioned in the TL;DR without sameAs links to Wikidata, (c) no compact answer in the first sentences of the three H2 sections. After correcting these three points the score rose to 81, and in parallel the citation rate in ChatGPT Search doubled from 8 % to 17 % within 6 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Citability Score?
The Citability Score is a 0–100 metric from Rankmio that measures how citable a web page is in LLM answers. It combines signals such as BLUF structure, FAQ coverage, structured data, paragraph length and entity clarity.
How is the Citability Score calculated?
Through multi-factor analysis: structure (BLUF, H2 hierarchy), formats (lists, tables), structured data (Article, FAQPage), author signals, recency, entity connections. Each factor is weighted and aggregated into an overall score.
What is a good Citability Score?
Above 70 is the target. Values between 40 and 70 are mediocre; below 40 signals structural problems for AI citation. Rankmio shows concrete suggestions for improvement per score component.
Does the Citability Score replace classic SEO metrics?
No, it complements them. Classic SEO targets Google rankings, the Citability Score targets AI citation. Both metrics are complementary. Content with a high Citability Score often ranks well in the classic sense too, because the same structural signals are at work.
