AI visibility

Also known as: AI Visibility, AI visibility, LLM Visibility

AI visibility is the GEO analogy to the classic visibility index: an aggregated metric for the presence of a brand or domain in AI answers across several LLM engines. It combines citation rate, mention rate and — depending on the tool — weighted factors such as engine reach and query importance. Unlike the classic visibility index, there are as yet no established industry standards: different tools calculate differently, and cross-tool comparisons are not meaningful.

Measuring AI visibility: components

AI visibility as a reporting KPI

There are three sensible reporting approaches: (1) Overall AI visibility as a 0–100 index, primarily for observing trends over time. (2) Citation rate per engine individually, for optimisation diagnostics (”where am I losing, where am I gaining?”). (3) AI visibility per topic cluster — if the domain covers several topics, report separately per cluster in order to recognise where the optimisation levers take effect.

AI visibility and classic SEO in reporting

Ideally, modern SEO reporting presents both metrics side by side: the classic visibility index (Sistrix/Searchmetrics) for Google SERP performance, and AI visibility for LLM answer performance. The two correlate in part (good rankings favour AI citation), but they also diverge: a brand can be strong in SEO and weak in AI (or the other way round) if only one of the two disciplines is actively optimised.

Example from practice

Example: A marketing agency tracks SEO visibility (Sistrix) and AI visibility (its own composite index from 5 engines, 24 phrases, 3× majority vote) for two clients at the same time. Client A: Sistrix VI +12 % over the quarter, AI visibility +3 % — classic SEO is working, GEO optimisation is missing. Client B: Sistrix VI flat, AI visibility +48 % — targeted GEO optimisation is having an effect, classic SEO is saturated. Both have value, but only tracking both disciplines shows where the real growth is taking place.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI visibility mean?
AI visibility is the presence of a brand or domain in the answers of generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews. It is analogous to the classic SEO visibility index, but for AI search.
How does AI visibility differ from SEO visibility?
Signal structure and measurement method. SEO visibility measures Google rankings across a keyword corpus. AI visibility measures citation in multi-engine AI answers. Together, the two produce the complete visibility picture for 2026.
Why has AI visibility become relevant?
Because of a market shift. Gartner expects a 25 % reduction in classic Google search queries by the end of 2026. ChatGPT and Perplexity are increasingly replacing the first port of call for research. Anyone who is not visible there does not exist for a growing share of potential customers.
How do you increase AI visibility?
Through GEO optimisation. BLUF structure, FAQ sections, structured data, live crawler access, authority signals, Wikidata presence. Rankmio GEO Audit and Content Studio are geared towards these signals.
