Also known as: Visibility Index, SI, Visibility score
The visibility index is an aggregated tool metric that quantifies a domain's organic visibility in the search results. For a defined keyword set (often hundreds of thousands of keywords per country) it combines the domain's position with the search volume of each keyword and the typical CTR per position. The result is a single number that allows domain visibility to be compared over time and against competitors. Sistrix Visibility Index, Searchmetrics Visibility, Semrush Visibility — all follow a similar logic, with different keyword sets.
Three real risks: (1) growth in visibility can come from long tail spam without any genuine business effect. (2) A loss of visibility can come from cleaning up poor URLs — positive for the business, negative for the index. (3) On small sites the index fluctuates randomly because of a handful of keyword movements. Recommendation: use visibility as one KPI among four or five, complemented by clicks from money cluster rankings, conversions from organic traffic and backlink growth.
Example: a marketing website loses 35 % of its Sistrix visibility over 6 months. First reaction: panic and an emergency audit. A detailed analysis shows that 28 % of the loss comes from cleaning up 4,000 thin tag pages that did have long tail visibility but produced not a single lead in 12 months. The remaining 7 % is an actual loss on money pages — a small finding. The visibility index alone would have led to the wrong conclusions.
