Knowledge Panel

Also known as: Knowledge panel, Knowledge Card, Brand Card

A Knowledge Panel is the information box that Google displays on the right-hand side of the SERP (on desktop) or as a card stack (on mobile) when the search query concerns an unambiguous entity — a brand, a person, a place, a concept. The content comes directly from the Google Knowledge Graph, which in turn is largely fed by Wikidata and Wikipedia. Knowledge Panels have an enormous visual effect in the SERP — they can shift brand search clicks dramatically and are a clear trust signal.

How to obtain a Knowledge Panel

Google generates Knowledge Panels automatically as soon as enough structured knowledge about an entity is available. Levers: (1) Wikipedia article — the gold standard, but with strict notability criteria. (2) Wikidata entity — a lower hurdle, yet still an important Knowledge Graph input. (3) Schema.org Organization markup with a complete sameAs pointing to all relevant external profiles. (4) Consistent NAP and brand information across authoritative directories (Crunchbase, LinkedIn, Twitter Verified). (5) Sustained brand mentions in authoritative media.

Verifying a Knowledge Panel

Anyone who already has a Knowledge Panel can verify it with Google — this gives the brand editing rights. Prerequisite: the identity of the brand owner must be demonstrable (official email address, domain confirmation). After verification, updates are possible directly (new logo, new description, new official profiles). Without verification you have to wait for Wikipedia or Wikidata updates, which is slower and less reliable.

Example from practice

Example: A DACH SaaS provider that had been on the market for four years had no Knowledge Panel — brand searches led to a SERP dominated by advertising and competitors. Strategy: a Wikidata entry with Crunchbase as a source, complete Schema.org Organization markup on the website with sameAs pointing to LinkedIn, Twitter and Crunchbase, and targeted PR with mentions in trade magazines. After nine months: a Knowledge Panel on the right of the SERP for brand searches, with logo, short description and profiles. Brand search clicks to the company's own website rose by 180 % thanks to the brand's clear visual dominance in the SERP.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Knowledge Panel?
A Knowledge Panel is the info box on the right-hand side of the Google SERP containing facts about an entity — person, organisation, place, work. It draws on the Google Knowledge Graph, Wikipedia, Wikidata and authoritative website signals.
How do you obtain a Knowledge Panel?
Through entity authority. A Wikipedia article, a Wikidata entry, consistent NAP data, an official website with structured data (Organization, Person) and verification via Google Business Profile. New brands typically need 6–24 months to be given a panel.
Can a Knowledge Panel be controlled?
Only to a limited extent. Google accepts verifications (email confirmation as panel owner) — images and core facts can then be updated. The text content continues to be generated from Google sources. There is no direct editing as there is on Wikipedia.
Why is a Knowledge Panel important?
A boost to trust and visibility. A panel signals to users and LLMs that ”this is a real, established entity”. The click rate on the panel URL rises measurably. Panels linked to Wikipedia lead to a higher citation rate in AI answers.
