Page-keyword mapping

Also known as: Keyword mapping, URL-keyword assignment, Keyword-URL matrix

Page-keyword mapping is the strategic assignment of every money page on a website to one clear primary keyword plus 2–3 secondary keyword variations. The aim: to prevent several pages from being optimised for the same keyword and cannibalising one another, and to make clear which page carries the "responsibility" for which keyword. Mapping is the bridge between keyword research and the content plan — without it, duplication, confusion and half-baked optimisation decisions arise quickly.

Workflow for mapping

  1. Export the keyword list — all prioritised money keywords from the research.
  2. SERP analysis per keyword — what currently ranks, and which content type?
  3. List of all your own URLs — from GSC or the sitemap.
  4. Matching — identify the thematically closest page for each keyword.
  5. Conflict resolution — when several pages address the same keyword: which page "wins"? What happens to the others (refocus, merge, noindex)?
  6. Identify gaps — keywords without a suitable page → new content brief.
  7. Maintain the mapping table — a single central source with page URL, primary keyword, secondary keywords and current position.

Mapping as an anti-cannibalisation tool

A classic cannibalisation problem: three articles on your own domain rank for "long tail SEO" — all at positions 8–14, none reaching the top 5. The reason: Google cannot clearly determine which one is the main answer. With page-keyword mapping it becomes clear: page A is primary for "long tail SEO basics", page B for "long tail SEO examples", page C for "long tail SEO tools". Refocusing the texts and title/meta tags along this mapping: within 8 weeks all three move into the top 5 for their respective sub-topics.

Page-keyword mapping in Rankmio

In the Rankmio Keyword Hub, page-keyword mapping can be maintained centrally per project: the assigned keywords per URL, automatic cannibalisation detection (when the same keyword is assigned to several URLs), and automatic suggestions for unassigned top-10 keywords. The mapping table is the basis for the page performance reports and internal linking recommendations.

Example from practice

Example: A SaaS website had 32 money pages but no central keyword mapping. The audit found 14 keyword cannibalisations (several pages for the same keyword) and 8 keywords without a suitable page (content gaps). A cleanup sprint over 6 weeks: for each conflict one page was designated as primary, the others refocused on sub-variations or merged; briefs were created for the 8 content gaps. After 4 months: 11 keywords in the top 5 (previously 3), consolidated visibility score +42%. A classic mapping clean-up without any new external visibility work.

Frequently asked questions

What is page-keyword mapping?
Page-keyword mapping assigns exactly one primary keyword objective to each important page. It prevents cannibalisation (several pages competing for the same keyword) and creates a clear ranking strategy.
Why does mapping matter?
Because cannibalisation dilutes ranking signals. If two pages are meant to rank for "SEO software", they compete with one another. Clear mapping: one page = one primary keyword cluster.
How does Rankmio create the mapping?
Automatically from GSC data. Rankmio analyses which page already has impressions and clicks for which keywords, recommends primary assignments and flags cannibalisation cases. Manual adjustment is possible.
What should you do about cannibalisation?
Three options: (1) content consolidation (merging two pages into one strong page), (2) differentiation (aligning each page with clearly distinct long tail keywords), (3) canonical (pointing the weaker page to the stronger one with rel=canonical).
