Keyword research

Also known as: Keyword Research, Keyword analysis

Keyword research is the systematic process of identifying, assessing and prioritising the search phrases target audiences use to look for your topics. It is the foundation of every serious SEO/GEO strategy: without it, content is produced blindly; with it, content is built deliberately around demand. Modern keyword research combines tool data (search volume, KD), GSC data (what already ranks), competitor analysis and the construction of topic clusters.

The keyword research workflow

  1. Seed keywords — brainstorming 10–30 main terms for the topic.
  2. Tool expansion — using keyword tools to collect long tails, related terms and "People Also Ask" questions. The list grows to hundreds of terms.
  3. SERP check — manually reviewing the top 10 for the most important terms: which content type ranks? Which search intent?
  4. Assessment — estimating search volume, difficulty, intent and conversion value for each keyword.
  5. Prioritisation — quick wins (medium SV, low KD, clear intent) first, money keywords over the long term.
  6. Cluster building — grouping related keywords into topic clusters, with one pillar page plus spokes per cluster.

Example from practice

Example: A new SaaS tool launches with visibility for its brand and product name only. Four weeks of keyword research surface 480 thematically relevant terms, 80 of which are prioritised as "clusters A to F". One pillar page and 6–10 spoke articles are planned per cluster. After nine months of content roll-out, the domain ranks in the top 20 for 320 of these keywords and monthly lead traffic doubles. Strategic ROI: nine months of research-based content planning beats 24 months of blind content.

Frequently asked questions

What is keyword research?
Keyword research is the systematic search for the terms target audiences enter into search engines. It combines volume, competitive density, search intent and business relevance. It is the basis of every SEO content strategy.
Which tools does keyword research require?
Three classes: (1) volume providers (Google Keyword Planner, DataForSEO), (2) SEO suites with competitor analysis (SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Rankmio Discovery XL), (3) question generators (AnswerThePublic, People Also Ask). Professional research needs at least one suite plus a question tool.
How do you prioritise keywords?
Using the sweet spot formula: search volume × click probability / keyword difficulty. High SV plus low KD plus matching search intent = high priority. Rankmio Sweet Spot Keywords applies this formula automatically to GSC data and Discovery results.
How many keywords does a page need?
One main keyword plus 5–15 semantic variants. The modern Google algorithm understands topics as clusters rather than as individual keywords. An article about the "Content Studio" should naturally contain related terms (AI content, brief templates, persona control).
