Long tail keyword

Also known as: Longtail keyword, Long-tail search query, Niche keyword

Long tail keywords are specific, longer search queries of typically 3 or more words — for example ”best running shoes for flat feet men” instead of just ”running shoes”. Each one has a low search volume (often < 100 searches/month), but taken together they usually exceed the volume of the money keywords by a clear margin. Their strength lies in precise search intent: someone searching for ”running shoes for flat feet men” is close to a purchase decision — the conversion rate is typically 2–5 × higher than for generic terms.

The long tail curve

The name comes from statistics (Chris Anderson, 2004): in every distribution of search queries there are a few top terms with high volume (the ”head”), followed by a steadily lengthening tail of more specific variations with lower volume. On most websites, 70–80 % of organic traffic comes from this ”long tail” — thousands of terms, each of which looks insignificant on its own, yet together they account for the bulk of the total.

Long tail strategy in SEO

Long tail and GEO

AI search engines are shifting search behaviour towards longer, more conversational queries — users phrase ChatGPT searches like questions to an expert (”Which running shoes are suitable for someone with flat feet and knee pain?”). Content that answers long tail questions clearly and concisely benefits twice over: better classic long tail rankings and a higher likelihood of citation in AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search.

Example from practice

Example: An outdoor shop has 12 money keywords with high volume (e.g. ”women's hiking boots”, 18,000 searches/month) and 320 long tail terms (e.g. ”best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet women”, 90 searches/month). A classic SEO strategy would go primarily after the money keywords. The data shows that the 320 long tails together account for 68 % of organic traffic, and their conversion rate is 4.2 times higher than that of the money keywords. Expanding the content of the long tail clusters delivers ROI considerably faster than a frontal assault on the head.

Frequently asked questions

What is a long tail keyword?
A long tail keyword is a specific, usually longer search query with low search volume (typically 10–500/month) and clear intent. Example: instead of ”SEO tool” (short tail, 22,000/month), the long tail ”best SEO tool for small blogs with WordPress” (200/month).
Why are long tail keywords worthwhile?
Three reasons: (1) lower competitive density and easier to rank for, (2) precise search intent leads to a higher conversion rate, (3) in aggregate more traffic than individual high-volume keywords. Studies show that 70 % of all Google searches are long tail.
How do you find long tail keywords?
Through four sources: (1) Google Suggest, People Also Ask, related searches, (2) GSC impressions under 100/month, (3) competitor analysis with ”keyword gap” tools, (4) AnswerThePublic and similar question collectors. Rankmio Discovery XL combines all sources automatically.
Are long tail keywords more important for GEO?
Yes — specific questions are the core of AI answers. ChatGPT and Perplexity answer long tail questions (what, how, why and where questions) directly. Anyone delivering precise long tail content with BLUF is cited more often than with generic short tail topics.
