Transfer GEO content to WordPress, without installing a plugin

Rankmio doesn’t need a plugin on your WordPress website to load and transfer an article to WordPress. WordPress has had the interface built-in since version 5.6. Application passwords are used in WordPress for this. This article shows how well it works.

Generate application password in WordPress

For Rankmio to securely access your posts via the API, you need to create an API key or an application password in your WP backend:

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard
  2. Navigate to Users > Profile (or edit the user you want to use for the API).
  3. Scroll all the way down to the Application Passwords section.
  4. Enter a name for the new application password in the field (e.g. Rankmio Integration).
  5. Click on Add New Application Password.
  6. Important: Copy the generated password (the long password with spaces, e.g. xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx) immediately. Once you leave the page, it will no longer be displayed.

An application password is an additional password for exactly one application. You can revoke it anytime in WordPress without changing your own password. Rankmio stores it encrypted.

A common misconception is that an application password can only write posts. It can do everything the user it belongs to is allowed to do. An administrator’s password can also install plugins or create users via the same interface.

Therefore, create a dedicated user for Rankmio with the role of “Editor”. An Editor can write and publish posts and pages but cannot install plugins or change settings. The “Author” role is not sufficient. WordPress removes code blocks from posts by authors, including structured data.

In Rankmio, go to your user area under Connections and simply set up the connection there.
From then on, you can load, edit and directly export content from your WordPress website in the editor.

What arrives in WordPress during transfer

Rankmio transfers the article with all headings, paragraphs, lists and tables as a draft or directly as a published post. You set categories, tags, excerpt and slug before sending. Instead of a post, it can also be a page or a custom content type of the website.

Rankmio writes the structured data (Schema.org as JSON-LD) directly into the post. If your website uses Yoast, Rank Math, AIOSEO or SEOPress, the plugin already generates an article schema. Rankmio recognises this and only transfers what is missing, such as the FAQ. Otherwise, the same article would appear twice in the data.

A quiz from the Content Studio arrives as a collapsible version without script. Many WordPress installations filter scripts out of posts, and a quiz question with a collapsible answer works everywhere.

Rankmio uploads the first image of the article to the media library and sets it as the featured image. Rankmio does not currently handle image size, compression or alt texts in the media library. That remains the responsibility of your website or an image plugin you probably already use.

Rankmio checks whether the structured data is present on the page

That structured data was transferred does not mean it appears on the page. Themes, security plugins and missing permissions can filter it out without any notification.

After publishing, Rankmio therefore calls up the new page and checks whether the transferred schema types arrive there. If they are missing, Rankmio tells you and names the usual cause: the account lacks permission to write code into posts.

Existing posts can also be edited

Most websites don’t need new articles, but better old ones. Therefore, Rankmio also loads existing posts and pages from WordPress into the Content Studio editor. There you see how quotable the text is, i.e. how easily an AI can take individual statements from it and cite them as a source. You edit it manually or with the AI.

When writing back, Rankmio shows you what changes and only writes to the same post after your confirmation. Page builder blocks like Elementor remain untouched.

A KI agent can also take this route

Via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), AI agents like Claude or Cursor connect directly with Rankmio. They can write drafts, send them to WordPress and edit existing posts if the API key allows it. Before each transfer, the agent asks you, and before writing back, it shows you what changes.

Whether the content works is only shown by measurement afterwards

“GEO-optimised” is a claim until someone measures it. After publication, Rankmio’s sitemap crawl includes the new page and checks it. The citation tracker regularly asks your questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews and counts whether your page is cited as a source. Only then can you see if the work was worth it.

Setup takes only a few minutes

  1. Create a new user in WordPress under Users with the role “Editor”.
  2. Log in with this user. Create an application password named “Rankmio” under Profile → Application Passwords and copy it.
  3. Enter your website address (with HTTPS), username and password in Rankmio under Profile → Publish. Use “Test connection” to check if everything is correct.
  4. In the Content Studio editor, send a finished draft with “Send to WordPress”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sending to WordPress cost credits?

No. Credits are used for creating drafts and research in the Content Studio. Sending to WordPress and loading existing posts are free of charge.

Can I disconnect the connection at any time?

Yes. Revoke the application password in WordPress under Profile → Application Passwords. From that moment, Rankmio can no longer send anything to your website. Your own password remains unaffected.

Do I have to remove Yoast or Rank Math for this?

No. Rankmio recognises these plugins and only adds the structured data they do not generate themselves. You continue to manage the SEO title and meta description in the plugin.

Why is the schema missing on my published page?

Usually, the WordPress account lacks the “unfiltered_html” permission. Without it, WordPress removes code blocks from posts. Editors and administrators have it on a single WordPress site, authors do not. In a WordPress multisite, only super admins have it.

Does this also work with page builders like Elementor or Divi?

New posts arrive as normal content and can be further edited in the builder. When editing existing posts, Rankmio loads the text into the editor and protects the builder’s blocks. If a post is fully built with a builder, the text often isn’t in the normal content field. Then Rankmio cannot load it.
