Also known as: Position 0, Direct Answer, Answer box
A featured snippet is a highlighted answer box that Google displays above the classic organic results for roughly 12–15 % of all search queries. It contains a short extract from a web page (40–60 words, a list, a table or a video clip) together with the source URL. Because of its premium position, the featured snippet is known as ”Position 0". Since the rollout of AI Overviews in 2024–2025, the CTR on featured snippets has been falling, yet they remain a central GEO lever.
Three basic rules: (1) Pose the search query as a question in an H2 or H3 and answer it immediately below in 40–60 words. (2) Use structures that match the snippet format — lists for steps, tables for comparisons. (3) Rank in positions 1–10, because Google draws featured snippets exclusively from the top 10. A page in position 5 with a better answer structure can displace position 1 from the snippet.
Content that wins featured snippets is cited disproportionately often in AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search — both systems use similar signals for ”compact, clearly formulated answers". Snippet optimisation is therefore also the most important quick win for GEO: the same structure, twice the effect.
Example: A guide article for ”What is long tail SEO" ranks in position 4. After restructuring: the H2 is phrased as a question, immediately below it a 52-word paragraph gives a concise answer, and only then follows deeper content. After 5 weeks the article takes the featured snippet from the previous position-2 page — clicks rise from 240 to 920 per month, because the snippet makes the page visible beyond its actual ranking position.
