People Also Ask (PAA)

Also known as: People Also Ask, PAA, Related questions, Similar questions

People Also Ask (PAA) is a clickable question box in the Google SERP that shows questions related to the main query — each with an expandable answer and a source URL. Expanding a question adds further questions, so the box can potentially grow indefinitely. PAA is interesting for SEO in two ways: as a source of visibility (every answered PAA places a source URL in the SERP, often with a high CTR) and as a long tail research goldmine (which questions do users actually ask about the topic?).

PAA as long tail research

PAA is the most honest source for ”what do users really ask?” — the questions come from genuine Google searches, not from tool estimates. Workflow: (1) Enter the money keyword in Google. (2) Expand the PAA box and collect all questions. (3) Expand each question individually to trigger further questions. (4) After 20–30 iterations you have a dense list of long tail questions. (5) For each cluster article, build in the most important PAA questions as H2/H3 headings with a direct answer. This produces content that answers exactly the questions users are asking.

PAA and the GEO connection

PAA is the SERP feature that overlaps most strongly with GEO optimisation: what gets a page into PAA (compact question-and-answer structure, FAQ schema, brand trust) also gets it into AI answers and AI Overviews. PAA optimisation is therefore both an SEO and a GEO investment — the same effort, twice the effect.

Example from practice

Example: An advice magazine uses PAA as the research basis for every new article: for each main topic, 20–30 PAA questions are collected, 8–10 of them built in as H2/H3 headings with a compact answer, and FAQPage schema added. Effect after a four-month roll-out across 60 articles: 38% of the articles rank for at least 3 PAA questions with their own entry in the SERP PAA box. Overall domain traffic +42%, because PAA clicks (often long tail clicks) come on top of classic organic clicks.

Frequently asked questions

What is People Also Ask (PAA)?
People Also Ask is the expandable question-and-answer box in the Google search results containing 3–5 related questions. Clicking a question reveals a short answer with a source link — plus new related questions. An important traffic source for FAQ-optimised content.
How do you get into People Also Ask?
Through FAQ-optimised content. Clear question-form headings as H2/H3, direct 40–60-word answers, FAQPage schema. Google often pulls PAA snippets from pages already ranking in positions 5–20 — there is no requirement to be in the top 3.
Do PAA questions change?
Yes, dynamically. With every click interaction Google generates new related questions — the list is practically endless. For content research: click through the first 15–20 questions manually to capture the universe of questions around the topic.
Are PAA boxes important for GEO?
Yes — they signal which questions LLMs also have to answer. Content that appears in PAA is also cited more frequently by ChatGPT and Perplexity. FAQ structure is the common denominator of both channels.
