Google AI Overviews

Also known as: AI Overviews, AIO, SGE, Search Generative Experience, AI Mode

Google AI Overviews (AIO, formerly ”Search Generative Experience"/SGE) are AI-generated answer boxes that Google has been showing above the classic organic results for many search queries since May 2024. They summarise the answer to the query in a few sentences and name linked sources. For GEO they are the most important new lever: on AIO-triggered queries the classic SERP CTR falls by 30–60 %, while at the same time a new visibility stage opens up — whoever appears as a source in the AIO box gains a more prominent position than any classic top-3 result.

What triggers AI Overviews

Google shows AIO selectively — above all for: (1) informational queries with a clear answer structure. (2) ”how to" and ”what is" questions. (3) comparison and evaluation queries. (4) complex multi-step queries. For purely transactional, navigational or YMYL topics (health, finance, legal) AIO is rarer. With AI Mode (roll-out in 2025), however, the mechanism is spreading increasingly to all query types.

How to appear as a source in AIO

AIO and the traffic effect

Studies (Ahrefs 2024, Semrush 2025) show that on AIO-triggered queries the average position-1 CTR falls by 35–60 %. At the same time, source links in the AIO box receive a considerably higher CTR than classic position 4–10 results. The strategic consequence: GEO optimisation (citability) becomes equal in importance to classic SEO. Anyone optimising only for the top 10 without citability loses visibility on AIO-triggered queries without losing SERP position.

Example from practice

Example: An advice website held position 3 for ”what is long tail SEO", with a classic CTR of 12 %. With the roll-out of AI Overviews for this query, the CTR falls to 6 %. The article is rebuilt: H2 as a question, a 52-word answer directly beneath it, Article schema with sameAs pointing to Wikidata, an FAQ section with FAQPage schema. After 6 weeks the article appears as one of three linked sources in the AIO box — the click share from this SERP rises to 14 % (higher than before AIO), because AIO sources are linked prominently.

Frequently asked questions

What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries right at the top of the Google search results. They answer the query directly with references to 3–5 cited sources. Rolled out in the USA since May 2024 and in Germany since 2025.
How do you get into an AI Overview?
As a cited source: (1) a clear answer structure with BLUF, (2) FAQ sections with question words, (3) structured data (Article, FAQPage), (4) high domain authority. The cited sources often come from the top 20 organic results, not always the top 3.
Does click traffic fall because of AI Overviews?
Yes, measurably. Adobe data from 2025: for queries with an AI Overview, classic click traffic falls by 20–35 %. For long tail questions the effect is more extreme. The counter-strategy is to be cited as a source — visibility then remains despite zero-click.
How do you check AI Overview mentions?
Manually via Google search or automatically with a citation tracker. Rankmio checks AI Overview citation per keyword and domain and aggregates the citation rate over time.
