Also known as: KD, Keyword difficulty, Ranking difficulty
Keyword Difficulty (KD) is a 0–100 score with which third-party tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO) estimate how competitive a keyword is. A high KD means that strong backlinks and well-optimised content are needed to reach position 10. A low KD means that even a young domain with a low DR can realistically rank for the keyword. KD is the second important sorting metric in keyword research — alongside search volume.
Every tool uses its own formula, which typically takes into account: (1) the average Domain Rating of the top 10 results; (2) the backlink profile strength of the top 10; (3) the length and depth of the content in the top results; (4) the share of brands in the top 10; (5) SERP features (featured snippets and AI Overviews make the competition more complex). The scales are not directly comparable — a KD of 40 in Ahrefs corresponds roughly to a KD of 50–60 in Semrush.
Rule of thumb: your starting KD = your domain DR. Anyone aiming at KD 60 with DR 20 is tilting at windmills — long tails (KD < 20) deliver faster results.
Example: a DR 25 domain examines two money keywords: ”CRM comparison” (SV 4,400, KD 52) and ”best CRM for solopreneurs” (SV 320, KD 17). The naive choice would be to target ”CRM comparison” — the higher search volume. The more realistic plan: KD 52 is unrankable for DR 25 within a reasonable timeframe. The long tail ”best CRM for solopreneurs” with KD 17 is achievable in 3–6 months, plus several similar long tails in parallel. After 9 months: the long tail cluster brings in more traffic than that single money keyword ever could — KD-realistic prioritisation was the lever.
