Mention Rate

Also known as: Brand Mention Rate, Mention rate

The mention rate is the share of AI answers to a search phrase in which a brand or domain is mentioned in the text without a clickable link to the source. Unlike the citation rate, it does not measure click potential but brand visibility within the answer. Example: an answer to "Which SEO tools are there" listing "Semrush, Ahrefs, Rankmio" counts as a mention of Rankmio — even without a linked source citation.

Mention rate vs. citation rate

Both metrics are complementary: citation rate measures source usage (a traffic lever), mention rate measures brand awareness within AI knowledge (an awareness lever). A brand with a high mention rate but a low citation rate is well known, yet is not used as a citable source — possibly because of a missing citability structure. Conversely, a high citation rate with a low mention rate means the domain works as a source, but the brand name rarely appears in general discussion — typical for pure tool brands with little brand PR.

What drives the mention rate

Mention rate in listicles

A particularly interesting sub-case: for "Which X are there" or "Best X for Y" search queries, LLMs often produce lists of brand mentions. Anyone named in such lists gains a brand awareness lever — even without a direct click. Optimisation: be mentioned on relevant comparison and listicle websites, create a Wikipedia entry, win industry awards — everything that strengthens brand knowledge in authoritative sources.

Example from practice

Example: A relatively new SaaS brand had a 0 % mention rate for "Best SEO tools 2026" across 5 engines. Strategy: PR outreach focused on industry magazines, inclusion in 8 major comparison reviews, a Wikipedia entry (with genuine references), guest articles on 3 important specialist blogs. After 14 weeks: mention rate across all engines at 38 % — the brand is mentioned in AI list answers, even when its own website is not cited as a source. Brand searches on Google rose in parallel by 280 %.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mention rate?
The mention rate is the percentage of AI answers in which a brand or domain is mentioned — with or without a link. Broader than the citation rate: it also counts unlinked brand mentions.
What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
A citation is a formal source with a link. A mention is any reference in the answer text — including the brand name alone without a link. Mention rate matters for brand awareness, while citation rate is the stronger lever for building traffic.
Does a negative mention count?
Yes, in simple mention trackers. Advanced trackers with sentiment analysis can distinguish positive, neutral and negative mentions. The Rankmio citation tracker supplies raw data; sentiment analysis is planned as an extension.
How important is the mention rate for brand building?
Very important in 2026. Consistent brand mentions in AI answers build trust with potential customers. Brands that nobody mentions do not exist for the AI user generation — even if classic rankings are strong.
