Also known as: Off-Page SEO, Off-page optimisation, Off-site SEO
Off-page SEO refers to all measures that take place outside your own website and that build a domain's authority and reputation across the web. At its core it is about developing a high-quality backlink profile, complemented by brand mentions, digital PR, local citations and online reputation. While on-page SEO is entirely under the control of the site operator, off-page SEO depends on the behaviour of third parties — which makes it harder to influence, but at the same time more credible as a ranking signal.
Three quality characteristics genuinely matter: Topical proximity — a link from an industry-specific specialist blog carries more weight than ten from generic directories. Authority of the linking domain — domain rating, trust flow and organic visibility serve as proxies. Position and context within the text — a link in the middle of an editorial article is worth more than one in the footer. What does not count (or is outright risky): mass directory submissions, forum spam, link farms, reciprocal exchanges and purchased link packages.
Example: A fintech start-up invests in a quarterly study on consumer credit behaviour, published with prepared data and clean visualisation. Outreach to business desks (more than 80 pitches in 4 weeks) results in 22 publications — among them Handelsblatt, Süddeutsche and t3n. This generates 47 new referring domains from DR 50+ sources within 8 weeks. Visibility for ”Privatkredit Vergleich” rises from position 27 to position 6 — the outreach effort alone cost less than three months of Google Ads spend.
