Page Experience Update

Also known as: Page Experience, Page Experience signal, PX update

The Page Experience Update was a Google algorithm update rolled out in 2021 that, for the first time, included page experience signals as a direct ranking factor in its assessment. These comprise Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP/FID, CLS), mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, the absence of intrusive interstitials and, originally, Safe Browsing as well. With the roll-out, page experience signals officially fell under the top three ranking factor categories. The update is now fully integrated into the core algorithm and runs permanently.

The page experience components

What page experience is NOT

Important for keeping expectations in order: page experience is one of many ranking factors, not a dominant one. A technically perfect page with thin content will not rank. A technically mediocre page with excellent content certainly will. Page experience optimisation is hygiene and a tie-breaker, not a frontal assault. Anyone chasing a 100 % Lighthouse score while the content is weak is optimising the wrong end.

Page experience and AI search

An indirect effect: AI engines such as ChatGPT Search and AI Overviews use classic search engine rankings as their pool of sources. Weak page experience signals lead to poorer rankings, which in turn reduces the likelihood of a citation. Anyone looking to raise their citation rate should therefore keep an eye on page experience in parallel — good classic rankings are a prerequisite for good AI visibility.

Example from practice

Example: a magazine domain had excellent content but problems with its page experience signals: an LCP of 4.2 s, an intrusive newsletter pop-up after 5 seconds and several sections that were not optimised for mobile. Competing against rivals with similarly strong content, the domain lost the tie-breakers — position 4 instead of 2 for 18 money keywords. An optimisation sprint over 8 weeks (LCP down to 2.1 s, the pop-up switched from a timer to exit intent, mobile sections refactored) moved 14 of the 18 keywords into the top 3 without a single change to the content. Pure page experience optimisation.

Frequently asked questions

What was the Page Experience Update?
The Page Experience Update was a Google ranking update from June 2021 that introduced Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS) as official ranking signals. It was supplemented by further UX factors: HTTPS, mobile-friendliness and the absence of intrusive interstitials.
What did the update change in concrete terms?
User experience became a direct ranking factor. Before: UX was an indirect signal conveyed through engagement metrics. From 2021: technical performance values feed directly into the ranking assessment. Sites with poor UX lost positions, good UX gained.
Is the update still active?
Yes, and it continues to be developed. INP replaced FID as a metric in March 2024. Thresholds are adjusted over time. Still true: page experience is one of more than 200 ranking factors, no 'miracle cure' on its own, but a solid building block.
How do you check page experience status?
In Google Search Console under 'Experience → Core Web Vitals' and 'Mobile Usability'. In addition: PageSpeed Insights for in-depth diagnosis. The Rankmio SEO audit summarises all page experience signals in a single score.
