Perplexity AI

Also known as: Perplexity, Perplexity.ai

Perplexity AI is an AI search engine launched in 2022 that presents LLM answers with clearly linked sources at the head of every answer. Perplexity uses a multi-model approach (its own models plus, optionally, GPT-4, Claude and Llama) and runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot. It is particularly interesting for GEO: the citation rate can be measured transparently, since every answer lists its sources visibly, and Perplexity users click through to sources markedly more often than ChatGPT users do.

What Perplexity cites

Perplexity's answer logic favours four things. Fresh sources with a clearly visible publication or update date. Structured content with a clear question-and-answer logic in the H2 headings. Factually substantiated statements — sources that cite sources themselves are preferred. And domain authority, although less so than ChatGPT: Perplexity is less brand-driven, which gives smaller specialist domains a realistic chance of being cited. A well-structured guide with genuine evidence can be cited even at a domain rating of 25.

Pro Search and multiple models

Perplexity has two modes. Quick Search handles straightforward answers; Pro Search produces deeper multi-step answers with targeted follow-up research. Pro Search cites considerably more sources per answer, often six to twelve instead of two to four — so a page ranking between fourth and tenth for a commercial keyword has far better citation chances in Pro Search than in Quick Search.

Access for PerplexityBot

Perplexity runs two crawlers: PerplexityBot for ordinary web indexing and Perplexity-User for on-demand requests during a user session. Both should be allowed in robots.txt. Blocking Perplexity makes a site impossible to cite in Perplexity answers; blocking the user crawler removes it from live requests in which someone explicitly asks about a particular domain.

Example from practice

Example: A niche outdoor-equipment blog with a domain rating of 28 rewrites twelve core guides around a clear question-and-answer structure and adds Schema.org markup with author and datePublished. After ten weeks its citation rate in Perplexity Quick Search is above 30 per cent for seven of the twelve main topics — and after four months the direct referral traffic from Perplexity exceeds that from Bing and matches what a Google ranking around position 15 delivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is Perplexity?
Perplexity is an answer engine with a search function, launched in 2022. Its central idea is that every answer carries visible source references — Perplexity presents the citations right next to the answer rather than as a hidden footnote.
How does Perplexity differ from ChatGPT?
Perplexity is search-first, ChatGPT is chat-first. Perplexity shows sources prominently, keeps answers shorter and is built for research. ChatGPT is built for dialogue and getting tasks done. What matters for GEO: Perplexity cites more often and more readily.
How do you get into Perplexity answers?
Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt, use a clear answer-first structure, keep publication dates current and build domain authority. Perplexity weights currency heavily — newer articles are cited in preference to older evergreen pieces.
Does Perplexity matter outside the English-speaking world?
Yes, and increasingly so. By 2026 Perplexity holds a double-digit share among research-minded users in German-speaking markets. Anyone optimising for GEO there should track Perplexity citations. The Rankmio citation tracker covers Perplexity as one of five engines.
