Rich Snippet

Also known as: Rich Result, enhanced search result, SERP feature

A rich snippet (today called a ”Rich Result" by Google) is an enhanced search result in the SERP that displays additional information beyond title, URL and description: star ratings, prices, images, clickable FAQ boxes, preparation steps, event dates, sitelinks. They are controlled by Schema.org markup on the page — whoever implements the appropriate markup qualifies for the respective rich result. Visible effect: more space in the SERP, more attention, a considerably higher CTR.

The most important rich snippet types

CTR effect of rich snippets

The CTR levers differ by type: review stars typically increase the CTR by 20–35%. FAQ rich snippets raise visibility, but can also ”clear away" clicks (the user receives the answer directly in the SERP snippet). HowTo brings +10–20% CTR plus more SERP surface. Sitelinks are a strong brand signal booster, above all for brand queries. Anyone combining several rich snippet types on one page can double the click share at an otherwise identical position.

Rich snippets vs. AI Overviews

Since 2024, AI Overviews have been changing SERP dynamics: classic rich snippets lose visibility for many queries because Google answers the question directly in the AIO block. The consequence for SEO: Schema.org markup remains mandatory (it is simultaneously a GEO lever — AI systems make use of it), but success is increasingly measured by the citation rate in AIO rather than by classic rich snippet clicks alone. FAQ schema remains by far the strongest double lever: a rich snippet in the SERP and, at the same time, a citation magnet in AIO.

Example from practice

Example: A recipe page ranks for ”vegan lasagne" at position 4 with a CTR of 4.1%. Implementation of Recipe schema with rating (4.7 stars from 89 reviews), preparation time and image: after 5 weeks the snippet appears with stars and image — the CTR rises to 11.8%, clicks from 320 to 920 per month, with no change in position. A classic schema quick win.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rich snippet?
A rich snippet is a Google search result with additional visual elements — star ratings, prices, expandable FAQ elements, images, recipe details. It is based on schema.org structured data. The advantage: a higher click-through rate, a better preview, more trust.
Which rich snippet types are there?
The most common ones: Product (price, availability, rating), Recipe (time, calories, photo), FAQ (expandable questions), HowTo (step by step), Video (duration, preview), Review (stars), Event (date, location), Article (date, author). All of them require valid schema.org markup.
Does Schema.org markup guarantee rich snippets?
No — it is necessary, but not sufficient. Google decides per query whether rich snippets are displayed. Factors: the quality of the structured data, thematic fit, site authority, competitive density. Some snippet types (FAQ) were heavily restricted in 2023.
How do you check eligibility for rich snippets?
Using the Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results). It shows which rich result types the page technically qualifies for. In addition, the performance report per rich snippet type in GSC under ”Enhancements".
