Schema.org markup

Also known as: Schema.org, Structured Data, JSON-LD, structured data

Schema.org markup is a vocabulary for describing structured data on web pages, launched jointly by Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex in 2011. With Schema.org markup, a page tells search engines explicitly what it is: article, product, FAQ, recipe, person, organisation, event. The common implementation is JSON-LD in the <head>. Schema.org is a requirement for rich snippets in the SERP and one of the most important levers for GEO visibility.

The most important schema types

Schema.org as a GEO lever

AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews use Schema.org markup as a key to entity understanding. An article with a complete Article schema including author, datePublished, about and mentions is cited as a source significantly more often than a bare HTML text. The linking of entities via sameAs to Wikidata QIDs in particular is a strong trust signal for the AI: it can assign the named people, organisations and terms unambiguously.

Validating schema — three tools

Practical example: a complete article with auto-generated schema

What does it look like in practice when Schema.org markup is generated from the editor rather than by hand? The Rankmio showcase Schema.org for GEO — how Rankmio built the article documents exactly that: a finished specialist article, alongside the full development history — brief, four target keywords, template, persona, nine active library sources and the JSON-LD generated by Rankmio on saving (Article + FAQPage + Quotation as a @graph), including Wikidata anchors via sameAs.

Example from practice

Example: An advice website had no Schema.org markup for 240 articles. Implementing Article schema with an author byline, Wikidata sameAs for the topic entities and FAQPage markup for the FAQ sections: after 8 weeks, 38% of the articles receive at least one rich snippet in the SERP and the average CTR rises by 28%. In parallel, 6 out of 10 top articles are cited regularly in AI Overviews — previously it was 1 in 10.

Frequently asked questions

What is Schema.org?
Schema.org is a standard for structured data founded in 2011 by Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex. It defines a vocabulary (types such as Article, Product, FAQPage, Organization) that helps search engines and LLMs understand website content semantically — instead of merely parsing text.
In which format is Schema.org embedded?
Recommended: JSON-LD. The JSON format is embedded as <script type="application/ld+json"> in the HTML head, is decoupled from presentation and has been preferred by Google since 2015. The alternatives Microdata and RDFa are considered legacy.
Which schema is most important for SEO?
It depends on the page type. Article and FAQPage are universally relevant. For e-commerce: Product plus Offer. For local businesses: LocalBusiness with address and opening hours. For news sites: NewsArticle. Rich results (stars, FAQ expanders, prices) are only possible with the matching schema.
Does Schema.org improve rankings directly?
Not directly, but strongly indirectly. Google confirms schema as an "understanding signal", not a ranking factor. Practical effect: higher CTR through rich results, better citability in Google AI Overviews, more frequent mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Visibility without structured data is difficult in 2026.
How do I check my schema markup?
With two tools: (1) the Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) shows whether Google accepts the structured data for rich results. (2) The Schema.org Validator (validator.schema.org) checks format conformity. Rankmio Content Studio generates schema markup automatically and validates it during the publishing process.
