Share of SERP

Also known as: SERP Share, Share of Voice, Visibility share

The Share of SERP is the share a domain holds of the total top-10 visibility (weighted by position and search volume) for a defined keyword set. It is calculated as the sum of a domain's own position-weighted visibility divided by the sum of the visibility of all domains in the top 10. This makes it possible to quantify how much of the ”SERP pie" a domain occupies — unlike absolute position, the Share of SERP takes the competitive constellation into account.

What the Share of SERP is good for

Classic Share of SERP findings

Three typical patterns: (1) Dominant market leaders often hold a 30–50 % share in their core topic — hard to attack head-on, but avoidable via long tail clusters. (2) Fragmented markets with 5–10 competitors at 5–15 % share each — here, jumps are possible more quickly. (3) Topic cluster specialists with a 0 % share in the broad market but a 25 % share in a sub-niche — the genuine winning strategies.

Share of SERP in the Rankmio position tracker

In the position tracker, per project: for each topic cluster the Share of SERP is calculated across the cluster keyword set, separately for your own domain and for every pinned competitor. A trend chart covering the last 12 weeks shows who is growing and who is shrinking. Where visible jumps occur, a diagnosis is suggested automatically (for example ”competitor X has made a 5-point jump in cluster B — presumably a new pillar page has been published").

Example from practice

Example: Three competitors are fighting over a cluster of 42 keywords: competitor A holds a 28 % share, competitor B 19 %, your own domain 12 %, with the rest distributed. After six months of cluster development (4 new spoke articles, an internal linking refresh, sameAs optimisation): your own domain is at 24 %, competitor A stable at 27 %, competitor B down to 14 %. Classic SERP observation would have shown ”we are on average 2 positions better" — the Share of SERP shows clearly that the visibility shift is running against competitor B, not against A.

Frequently asked questions

What is Share of SERP?
Share of SERP measures the percentage share a domain holds of visible SERP positions for a keyword corpus. It is calculated from the number of ranking keywords, position weighting and click probability.
How does Share of SERP differ from the visibility index?
Share of SERP is relative, the visibility index is absolute. Visibility measures your own presence on a 0–100 scale. Share of SERP measures what percentage of the available SERP space a domain occupies — in comparison with all competitors.
What is Share of SERP used for?
For market share analysis and competitive pressure. If a domain has a 15 % Share of SERP and a competitor has 40 %, it is clear that there is a great deal of ground to make up. At 45 % versus 8 %, the prioritisation is different: defence rather than attack.
How do you increase Share of SERP?
Through the number of ranking keywords and rises in position. More long tail content means more keywords and therefore more share. Optimising the positions of existing keywords adds further weight. The Rankmio Opportunity Engine identifies the fastest share levers.
