Title tag

Also known as: Page title, title element, Meta title

The title tag (<title>Page title</title>) in the HTML head defines the title of a web page. It appears as the click headline in the SERP, as the tab label in the browser and as the default anchor when the page is shared on social media. Unlike the meta description, the title tag is a direct ranking signal — and at the same time the most important CTR lever on the entire website.

The optimal title tag formula

When Google rewrites the title tag

Studies (Zyppy 2021, Semrush 2024) show that Google replaces the defined title in 60–70 % of cases — often where titles are vague in content, stuffed or obviously generic. Common triggers: (1) keyword stuffing (”buy shoes cheap | best shoes | top shoe shop"). (2) Generic titles with no relation to the search query. (3) Identical titles across many URLs. (4) A title that is much longer than the page H1. The solution: word the title tag specifically for the top search query and keep the H1, as the second most important source, equally fitting.

Finding title tag quick wins

In Google Search Console, look for keywords in positions 1–10 whose CTR is clearly below the average for that position: this is usually where the title is the problem. Rewrite with the money keyword at the front, a clear benefit and, where appropriate, a date or indication of currency (”Dry shampoo test 2026", ”… updated May 2026"). Measure after 4–8 weeks — with good execution, +20 to +60 % more clicks without any change in position is realistic.

Example from practice

Example: A comparison portal ranks in position 3 for ”car hire Mallorca", but its CTR is only 2.8 % (the average for position 3 is around 10 %). Title: ”Car hire | We help you | mietwagenportal.de". Rewritten: ”Car hire Mallorca 2026 — 18 providers compared on daily rates". After 5 weeks the CTR stands at 9.4 % and monthly clicks rise from 410 to 1,380 — without any change in ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the title tag?
The title tag (<title>) is the page title in the HTML head. It appears as the clickable heading in Google's search results, as the browser tab title and as the preview in social media shares. It is directly relevant to ranking and is usually the single most important SEO factor per page.
How long should the title tag be?
50–60 characters for desktop, 40–45 for mobile. Google displays roughly 580 pixels of width in the SERP — titles that are too long are truncated and replaced with an ellipsis. Put the most important information (keyword, benefit) in the first 30 characters.
What belongs in a good title tag?
Three elements: (1) the main keyword as close to the beginning as possible, (2) a clear benefit or USP (”Free", ”2026", ”Comparison"), (3) the brand name at the end. Example: ”Best SEO software Germany 2026 — an honest comparison | Rankmio".
Does Google overwrite titles?
Yes, for around 60 % of queries. Google generates dynamic titles from the H1, anchor texts and context when it judges your own title tag to be ”not fitting". To avoid this: a clear title tag tailored directly to the search intent, consistent with the H1 and meta description.
