Also known as: Thematic authority, Topical Trust, Subject Authority
Topical Authority describes the perception of a domain as a recognised expert in a specific subject area. It is not a single measurable signal but the aggregated result of systematic topic coverage (many interconnected articles within the subject area), strong E-E-A-T performance (visible authors, external recognition), high-quality backlinks from topically relevant sources and consistent brand mentions within the industry. In the SEO era of 2026 it is more valuable than pure domain authority — a small domain with high topical authority in a niche beats a generic DR 60 domain without a thematic focus.
Topical authority is not a quick win. Building it takes 12–36 months of consistent work on a thematic focus. But it is durable — once established, a domain dominates a subject area lastingly, even when new competitors with higher DR appear. Examples: HubSpot in the inbound marketing cluster, Backlinko in the technical SEO cluster. Both have been building their topical authority systematically for more than a decade — and are barely assailable.
Example: In 2023 a marketing magazine deliberately decided against a generic ”marketing” positioning and in favour of a clear topical authority strategy in the cluster ”Generative Engine Optimization”: 1 pillar page (4,500 words), 18 spokes, its own quarterly GEO studies, speaker slots at 4 conferences per year, a Wikidata entry, clear author profiles. After 24 months: share of SERP for the GEO cluster at 31 % (starting from 0 %), citation rate in ChatGPT for ”GEO strategy” queries at 64 %, organic brand searches for ”magazine + GEO” at 2,400 per month. A classic build-up of topical authority that brought local visibility everywhere within the topic cluster.
