Also known as: Generative AI, GenAI, generative artificial intelligence
Generative AI is the umbrella term for artificial intelligence systems that produce new content rather than only analysing what exists: text through ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini; images through DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion and Imagen; audio through ElevenLabs and similar; video through Runway, Sora and Veo; and code through GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Claude Code. With ChatGPT's breakthrough into the mainstream at the end of 2022, generative AI became a mass technology and has, within three years, structurally altered whole industries — from marketing through software development to the creative professions.
Three risks matter. Mass-produced thin content is devalued rigorously by Google's helpful content system. Hallucinations that pass unchecked — invented statistics and fabricated sources — are outright dangerous where money or health are at stake. And the generic register: AI text that has not been edited carries a recognisable default tone, which experienced readers and evaluation models alike identify as machine-written. The remedy is to use AI as a writing assistant rather than as a substitute for editorial judgement.
Used responsibly, generative AI accelerates every GEO lever. Schema.org markup can be generated rather than maintained by hand, entity gap analyses take minutes instead of days, content clusters can be extended systematically, and title and description variants arrive in five minutes rather than thirty. The essential safeguard is unchanged: review the output editorially, verify the facts, and rework it into the brand's voice. AI is a lever, not a replacement.
Example: A five-person editorial team introduced an AI brief generator as the first step in its workflow. Where writing a brief per article had taken six hours, it now takes 30 minutes of generation plus an hour of editorial sharpening. Output per editor doubled while quality rose, because the machine supplied structures that human briefs often omit — entity lists, suggested FAQs. Six months on the team was publishing twice as many articles with no additional staff, no perceptible loss of quality, and measurably better rankings for the new pieces than the old ones had achieved.
