Also known as: Copilot, Microsoft Copilot for Developers
GitHub Copilot was the first AI coding assistant to reach a mass audience (launched in 2021, generally available in 2022) and today serves millions of developers worldwide. Unlike Cursor or Claude Code, Copilot is a plugin for existing IDEs — not an editor in its own right. Since 2024 it has offered a workspace mode for multi-file tasks and chat integration within GitHub.com itself.
Copilot is stronger at code completion than at autonomous tasks. For SEO optimisations based on the Rankmio export, Copilot Chat with workspace mode is particularly well suited: put the JSON file into the repository and write a chat prompt with the instruction. Copilot Workspace (beta) can also plan and execute entire sequences of changes.
Example: A developer with an established VS Code setup does not want to switch to Cursor or Claude Code. Using Copilot Chat, they open the Rankmio export and write ”Write four FAQ items each for the three pages with the lowest citability score, in the style of the existing entries”. Copilot returns diffs and the developer clicks Apply.
