Also known as: Majority Vote, Majority decision, Multi-run tracking
The Majority Vote method is the standard tracking technique for reliable GEO citation reports. It solves the fundamental problem of LLM answers: they are not deterministic — the same query returns a slightly different answer the second time round, often with different sources. A single check is therefore noise, not signal. Majority Vote means that every query is repeated several times (typically 3×), and a source only counts as ”cited” once it appears in at least the majority of runs (for example 2 out of 3).
LLM answers have a built-in ”temperature” variability — the higher it is, the more creative and the more unpredictable the output. Even at temperature 0, answers are not 100 % identical, because the models use non-deterministic sampling processes. One check may show a citation, the next may not show the same citation — without anything having changed on the source itself. Anyone tracking without Majority Vote builds reports on random fluctuations rather than on genuine visibility trends.
Standard configuration: 3 repetitions per search query per engine. A source counts as cited if it appears in 2 or 3 answers. With 12 tracking phrases × 5 engines × 3 runs, that comes to 180 LLM queries per tracking run. Anyone wanting to track more tightly (for example 5 repetitions per phrase, giving a 3-out-of-5 threshold) gets more reliable figures, but at 5× rather than 3× the effort.
Example: An agency started GEO tracking without Majority Vote — 1 check per phrase per engine. First week: 32 % citation rate. Second week: 41 %. Third week: 28 %. Fourth week: 38 %. The result was wild ”noise” from which no trends could be read. After switching to threefold Majority Vote: the citation rate remained stable at 35–37 % over 4 weeks, with clear trends visible for individual phrases. Before: 4 weeks of lost data. After: a reliable basis for optimisation.
