Also known as: ChatGPT Search, SearchGPT, GPT Search
ChatGPT Search, announced beforehand as "SearchGPT", is the web search engine OpenAI has built into ChatGPT and made publicly available in October 2024. Instead of a classic list of results it produces an answer written by the model, with sources linked visibly as citations — typically two to four per answer. It is one of the fastest-growing search engines of the AI era and one of the most important target engines for GEO, because ChatGPT users click through to cited sources at a high rate.
This carries an important strategic implication: ChatGPT Search uses Bing for its live retrieval. Anyone who ranks well in Google but systematically ignores Bing has poorer chances in ChatGPT Search. Bing SEO has become relevant again — submitting the sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, tending Bing visibility, verifying the API. A few hours of work that pays off in GEO visibility by way of the ChatGPT bridge.
Example: A B2B magazine tracked its visibility in ChatGPT Search across 16 core topics from October 2024 onwards, starting at a citation rate of 12 per cent. It submitted its sitemap to Bing, verified access for OAI-SearchBot, gave every pillar page a clear question-and-answer structure and added visible update dates. Five months later the citation rate stood at 47 per cent, with 2,300 monthly clicks of direct referral traffic from chatgpt.com — a traffic source that had not existed twelve months earlier.
