Sitemap monitor

Also known as: Sitemap Monitor, Sitemap watcher

The sitemap monitor is the module for the ongoing observation of sitemaps — both for your own domain and for pinned competitors. For each monitored domain, the sitemap (or sitemap index with sub-sitemaps) is retrieved at configurable intervals (daily, weekly) and compared with the previous version. Changes — new URLs, removed URLs, altered last-modified dates — are reported as alerts and visualised in the tracker.

Monitoring your own sitemap

Monitoring competitor sitemaps

A particularly interesting use case: competitor sitemaps reveal what the competition is publishing before the crawl. New article URLs in a competitor's sitemap act as an early warning system: which competitor is currently producing content on which topic area? Which sub-clusters are being expanded? Aggregated over several weeks, this yields clear strategic signals that can be inferred from the content.

The sitemap monitor as a hub module

In the Rankmio sitemap hub there are two tabs — Crawls (full crawls of your own domain) and Monitor (ongoing sitemap monitoring). The monitor tab has an internal switcher for ”Own” / ”External competitors”. Bookmark-stable URLs exist for every sub-view, so that reports and direct links can be maintained.

Example from practice

Example: An agency looks after an online shop and monitors 3 direct competitor sitemaps. Within 8 weeks the monitor discovers that competitor A is systematically building out long tail product pages (78 new URLs per week for specific niche products). The response: the agency thereby identifies growing demand in specific product sub-categories that its own shop does not yet serve. Following a range extension and 24 new product pages for these niches, organic shop traffic was 18 % higher 4 months later, because competitor visibility had been recognised as an early indicator.

Frequently asked questions

What does the sitemap monitor do?
The sitemap monitor tracks changes to a site's sitemap.xml — your own site or competitor sites. It recognises newly added URLs, deleted URLs and changed priorities, and issues alerts when changes are significant.
Why monitor competitor sitemaps?
To see new competitor content immediately. When a competitor launches a new landing page for a core keyword, you know within hours. Competitive intelligence without manual site checks.
How often is the sitemap checked?
Daily for active monitoring targets. The sitemap delta is calculated by comparing the stored snapshot with the current one. New URLs are recorded in the history and analysed.
What happens when new URLs are detected?
The new pages are analysed automatically. New URLs are crawled, their content is extracted, keyword assignment is estimated and the competitive impact is assessed. URLs with a strong signal end up in alerts so that you can respond.
