Also known as: Sitemap Monitor, Sitemap watcher
The sitemap monitor is the module for the ongoing observation of sitemaps — both for your own domain and for pinned competitors. For each monitored domain, the sitemap (or sitemap index with sub-sitemaps) is retrieved at configurable intervals (daily, weekly) and compared with the previous version. Changes — new URLs, removed URLs, altered last-modified dates — are reported as alerts and visualised in the tracker.
A particularly interesting use case: competitor sitemaps reveal what the competition is publishing before the crawl. New article URLs in a competitor's sitemap act as an early warning system: which competitor is currently producing content on which topic area? Which sub-clusters are being expanded? Aggregated over several weeks, this yields clear strategic signals that can be inferred from the content.
In the Rankmio sitemap hub there are two tabs — Crawls (full crawls of your own domain) and Monitor (ongoing sitemap monitoring). The monitor tab has an internal switcher for ”Own” / ”External competitors”. Bookmark-stable URLs exist for every sub-view, so that reports and direct links can be maintained.
Example: An agency looks after an online shop and monitors 3 direct competitor sitemaps. Within 8 weeks the monitor discovers that competitor A is systematically building out long tail product pages (78 new URLs per week for specific niche products). The response: the agency thereby identifies growing demand in specific product sub-categories that its own shop does not yet serve. Following a range extension and 24 new product pages for these niches, organic shop traffic was 18 % higher 4 months later, because competitor visibility had been recognised as an early indicator.
