Competitor analysis

Also known as: Competition analysis, Competitor Analysis, Competitive analysis

Competitor analysis is the systematic evaluation of the SEO/GEO positioning of direct competitors, with the aim of: (1) identifying your own gaps, (2) recognising successful strategies, (3) realising quick wins by closing those gaps. It is one of the highest-ROI SEO disciplines: instead of developing a new strategy from scratch, you learn from the competition what works and implement it in a way that suits your own context.

The three dimensions of competitor analysis

Which competitors should you pin?

Important: a maximum of 3–5 direct competitors per project, not 10 or more. Otherwise the gaps become diluted: if a keyword is only ranked for by 1 of 10 pinned competitors, it is not a genuine gap but noise. Selection: (1) direct business competition, not simply the SEO top 10. (2) At least comparable domain strength (DR ± 20). (3) A close thematic fit. Anyone competing as a specialist tool against a generalist learns little from that comparison.

Competitor tracking as a routine

Weekly competitor pulls (in Rankmio: the competitor data package) show over time: who is growing, who is falling? Which new topic clusters is the competition building up? Which new backlink sources are being won? This trend data is often more valuable than the current status snapshot — it reveals the competition's strategic movement before that movement becomes noticeable in your own rankings.

Example from practice

Example: An agency looks after a client and pins 4 direct competitors. First competitor analysis: 240 keywords as a keyword gap (competitors rank, the client does not), 87 domains as a backlink gap. Prioritisation by volume and difficulty: 48 keywords as a quick-win cluster with a clear content lever, 22 outreach targets for backlinks. After 5 months: 38% of the keyword gaps closed (long tail clusters expanded), 17 new backlinks won from the gap plan, visibility doubled. A classic competitor analysis ROI.

Frequently asked questions

What is SEO competitor analysis?
SEO competitor analysis compares your own website with the top rankers for target keywords. The questions: who ranks at present? Why? Which content structure, which backlinks, which authority signals? It is the basis of any serious SEO strategy.
Which competitors should you analyse?
Three classes: (1) direct business competitors, (2) SERP competitors (whatever ranks for your keywords, even if it is not a business competitor), (3) authority references (sites whose structure you want to copy). The Rankmio competitor data package finds SERP competitors automatically.
Which metrics matter in the comparison?
Six core metrics: number of indexed pages, referring domains, Domain Rating, content length of top pages, frequency of new content, keyword coverage. Rankmio shows all six in the competitor dashboard for each project.
How often should you carry out a competitor analysis?
Quarterly for top competitors, weekly for ranking changes. In-depth analyses make sense on a quarterly basis. Ranking shifts (who moves in, who drops out) should be observed weekly — the Rankmio position tracker delivers this automatically.
