DNS, WHOIS and why both matter for SEO

DNS records decide where a domain points; WHOIS data tells the world who owns it. Both feed into trust signals Google and AI engines weigh when ranking and citing a site.

The five DNS record types that matter

A / AAAA — the IPv4 / IPv6 server the domain resolves to. Missing AAAA can drop you from IPv6-only environments.
NS — the authoritative name servers. If they go down, the entire domain disappears.
MX — mail routing. Misconfigured MX records often correlate with deliverability issues (SPF/DKIM/DMARC follow).
TXT — holds SPF, DKIM, DMARC, Google Site Verification, Facebook Domain Verification and more. The most security-relevant record class.
CNAME — alias to another domain. Common for CDN integrations (Cloudflare, Vercel).

WHOIS reality check

Since GDPR (2018), most registries hide registrant data on consumer domains. .de via DENIC returns only status. .com shows registrar but no person. WHOIS still confirms domain age and expiry — both relevant signals: very young domains are treated with skepticism, expired domains lose all rankings within days.

The SEO/GEO angle

Generative engines use domain age, name server consistency and DNS health as part of their source-trust calculation. A page from a 12-year-old domain with clean DNS, valid SSL and consistent MX records is more likely to be cited than the same content on a 2-week-old domain. Run this check before launching a new site — fixing DNS issues post-launch costs weeks of indexing time.

WHOIS is a public registry query that returns metadata about a domain: registration date, expiry, registrar, and (historically) contact information. It is the original „who owns this domain" lookup, dating to the 1980s ARPANET. Since GDPR and ICANN redaction rules in 2018, registrant contact fields on most gTLDs (.com, .net) are hidden; you only see registrar and status.

DENIC (the .de registry) has restricted public WHOIS since 2018, following GDPR. You can only look up technical contact and status via the public interface; to reach the actual registrant you must go through DENIC's dispute channel with a legitimate legal interest. The same applies to most European ccTLDs (.at, .ch, .fr).

Both point a domain name to an IP address. A records point to an IPv4 address (four numbers, like 203.0.113.42). AAAA („quad-A") records point to an IPv6 address (long hex string). A domain can have both simultaneously — DNS resolvers pick whichever matches the client's connection. AAAA is the future-proof choice; A remains ubiquitous because most consumer connections still get an IPv4 assigned.

TXT records store arbitrary text at a DNS name — originally for human-readable notes, today mostly for machine-readable configuration. Common uses: SPF (email sender authorization: `v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com`), DKIM keys, DMARC policies, and domain-verification tokens for Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and countless SaaS providers. Multiple TXT records at the same name are allowed and combined by resolvers.

For SEO purposes, domain age is a weak signal on its own — Google has confirmed multiple times that a young domain can rank if the content is strong and the topical authority is built. A 10-year-old domain with a clean backlink history and consistent content has an advantage in trust signals, but not automatically in rankings. What matters more than raw age is „on-topic history" — a domain that has consistently covered the same theme for years outperforms an equally old but topically drifting one.

No. Google Search Advocate John Mueller has stated repeatedly that „domain age is not a ranking factor". What older domains often have is: more backlinks over time, an established Knowledge Graph entity, and pre-existing brand searches — all of which do help. Buying an aged domain to shortcut this is risky: expired domains often carry toxic backlinks or manual penalties from the previous owner that transfer with them.
