Why your IP matters for SEO and analytics

The IP address is the first attribute most analytics, geo-routing and rank-tracking services use to identify a user. If you test your own pages, your IP often distorts the result: bounce rate, click-through, even SERP rankings appear different in your view than they do for a fresh user.

The three SEO scenarios where checking your own IP helps

IPv4 vs. IPv6 — quick orientation

An IPv4 address has the shape 78.47.168.7; IPv6 looks like 2a01:4f8:c2c:4f7::1. Most consumer ISPs still hand out IPv4 by default, but IPv6 adoption has crossed 45 % globally (2026). Google indexes both — but its crawler primarily uses IPv4. Some hosters serve different DNS responses for IPv4 and IPv6, which can cause inconsistent indexing.

Privacy — what this page does and doesn't do

This tool shows the IP address that arrived at the Rankmio server. It does not store the IP, does not look up the ISP, does not run reverse DNS and does not query geo databases. Browser fingerprint data (user agent, screen, timezone) is read client-side via JavaScript and never sent to Rankmio.

The GEO angle — does IP affect AI engine visibility?

Indirectly. Generative engines (ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) crawl from their own IP ranges, but they sometimes use country signals derived from a user's IP to filter sources. A page that geo-blocks AI crawlers — even unintentionally via a CDN edge rule — will be invisible in AI citations for that country.

Alone, no. An IP address identifies your internet access, not you personally. To attribute an IP to a specific person, your provider needs to link connection logs to a subscriber — that requires legal grounds (subpoena, criminal investigation). For everyday web browsing your IP is „pseudo-personal" data under GDPR, which is why Rankmio does not store the IP shown here.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (about 4.3 billion possible), shown as four numbers like 203.0.113.42. IPv6 uses 128 bits (functionally unlimited), shown as hex groups like 2001:0db8::ff00:42. IPv4 was rationed via NAT (many devices share one public IP); IPv6 gives every device its own globally routable address. Most consumer connections in 2026 hand out both simultaneously (dual-stack).
Three practical routes: a commercial VPN routes your traffic through a foreign server (cheap and effective for the everyday web), the Tor browser bounces traffic through three volunteer nodes (higher anonymity, slower), and mobile networks with CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) share one public IP among thousands of subscribers, which is a mild form of hiding by itself. Web-facing sites still see „an IP" — just not one that maps back to your home connection.
Most residential connections use dynamic IPs that change after every router reboot, sometimes after a lease renewal (24 hours to a few days). Cellular data almost always shows a different IP than home Wi-Fi because the carrier assigns from its own pool. Corporate networks and universities usually share one public IP across everyone behind the firewall.

To city-level accuracy, yes — commercial GeoIP databases (MaxMind, IPinfo) map about 90% of IPv4 addresses to a city within 25-50 km. To street-level accuracy, no — that would require the carrier's internal DHCP logs. Mobile IPs are especially unreliable because the carrier's NAT gateway may be in a different city than the phone.
Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) means your internet provider assigns a private IP to your router and shares one public IP among hundreds of customers. Common with mobile, some cable and fiber providers. Consequence: incoming connections (game hosts, self-hosted services) do not reach you directly, and some website rate limits kick in unexpectedly because dozens of neighbours look like „the same IP" to the site.
IPv6 needs 128 bits per address because IPv4's 32 bits ran out. The 128-bit space is huge enough that every internet-connected device (fridges, sensors, phones) can have a unique public address forever. The long format is written in hex with colons; leading zeros can be shortened (2001:0db8::1 instead of 2001:0db8:0000:...:0001).
