Length is a quality signal — but only when it correlates with depth. Google and AI engines do not reward word count directly. They reward pages that answer a question completely. Word count is a useful proxy, no more.

Reading time and dwell time

Reading time is calculated at 230 words per minute — close to the German average (200-250). Google does not measure reading time directly, but it measures dwell time (how long a user stays on a page before bouncing). A 1,200-word article that takes 5 minutes to read sends a different signal than a 1,200-word article skimmed in 30 seconds.

The GEO angle — generative engines and content length

AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude) cite passages, not whole pages. A well-segmented 1,500-word article with three answerable Q&A blocks outperforms a 5,000-word monolith in citation rate. Use the word counter to verify that each section is short enough to be quotable (50-80 words per paragraph) and that the total is long enough to cover the topic.

Practical checklist

• Title plus H2 headings together under 200 characters — quick scan-ability.
• Paragraphs 30-60 words — keeps Perplexity and Google AI Overviews quoting full paragraphs.
• Single keyword appears 5-15 times in a 1,000-word article — avoid keyword stuffing.
• Reading time displayed on the page — small UX win, also a schema field (timeRequired).
