What is checked in detail?

A broken sitemap costs crawl budget and delays indexing of new content.

Reachability & XML syntax

HTTP status, encoding, file size and whether the XML is valid. Classic bugs: broken character encoding, wrong namespaces, truncated files.

Sitemap index resolution

Is it a single sitemap or an index (WordPress / Yoast / Rank Math)? For an index, we resolve up to 50 sub-sitemaps recursively and count the REAL URL total.

URL count & limits

Sitemaps may contain at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB. We check the order of magnitude and warn when you are close to a technical limit.

lastmod freshness

Stale or missing lastmod values confuse Google. We show the distribution (newest / oldest entries) and find sitemaps that have not been updated in months.

Broken URLs (sample)
