Local SEO

Also known as: Local SEO, Local Search Optimisation

Local SEO is the optimisation of a website and its digital brand ecosystem for regional search queries — that is, queries with a clear geographic reference (”hairdresser Munich”, ”dentist near me”, ”best pizzeria Berlin Schöneberg”). It is a discipline in its own right alongside classic SEO, with its own set of tools: Google Business Profile, NAP consistency across all directories, local backlinks, reviews, Local Pack optimisation. For local businesses (restaurants, trades, doctors, local service providers), Local SEO is often the single most important visibility lever there is.

The main pillars of Local SEO

The Local Pack as a visibility booster

The Local Pack is the three-result map box that Google displays above the classic results for local search queries — three businesses with a map, a rating and a click-to-call button. A position in the Local Pack typically brings 3–5× more clicks than a classic top 10 ranking for the same term. Local businesses therefore compete primarily for Local Pack positions rather than for classic SERP positions.

Example from practice

Example: A Berlin dental practice had a mediocre GBP and no systematic NAP maintenance. Local visibility for ”dentist Berlin Mitte”: position 14 in the classic results, not present in the Local Pack. After four months of consistent work (GBP completeness, 24 new reviews answered within 24 hours, a NAP audit and corrections in 18 directories, local backlinks from three city magazines): Local Pack position 2, classic ranking position 6, GBP clicks up from 12 to 92 per month. A textbook Local SEO lever.

Frequently asked questions

What is Local SEO?
Local SEO is optimisation for local search queries — ”dentist Frankfurt”, ”café near me”. Its core building blocks: Google Business Profile, local landing pages, NAP consistency, local backlinks, reviews. Important for every business with a physical presence or a service area.
What is the most important Local SEO factor?
Google Business Profile. It governs placement in the Local Pack (the three map results) and in Google Maps. Completeness, current photos, regular posts and review management are central. Without a profile there is no local ranking.
How many reviews does a business need?
At least 10, ideally 50+ with 4.0+ stars. It depends on the competition: check the Local Pack top three for your target keywords. If they have 100+ reviews, you will need a comparable number. Important: a continuous flow of new reviews, not a batch of 200 reviews in a single week (a manipulation signal).
Are local backlinks important?
Yes, very. Backlinks from local chambers of commerce, associations, the local press and industry directories signal regional relevance. They contribute to Local Pack rankings, which are assessed differently from classic SEO.
